About the Lindsay District Sports Hall of Fame
In 1992, a group of concerned and dedicated citizens came together with the sole purpose of creating a venue whereby local athletes, builders of sports and accomplished teams could be formally recognized. A few months later, after much discussion and deliberating, the Lindsay and District Sports Hall of Fame was created in the spring of 1993. Founding board members, with input from the Peterborough Sports Hall, had created a template and organization that would have permanent and lasting positive implications for our area. Now, almost three decades later, The Lindsay and District Sports Hall of Fame has inducted over 110 athletes and builders and twelve teams of distinction. As well, it has in its possession over three thousand items of sporting achievement and memorabilia. Much of this sports history is showcased in display cases throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes with the main body of memorabilia being preserved and displayed in our twenty-one individual cases at the Recreation Complex in Lindsay. Several of the individuals recognized by the Lindsay and District Sports Hall of Fame have achieved national and international recognition and some garnering Olympic status and success.
In the year 2005, the Student Bursary-Scholarship Program was created to recognize and acknowledge two or more graduating secondary school students who had achieved College and/or University studies related to Sports and Recreation. For the past fifteen years the “Hall” is pleased to have been able to assist 34 young people striving to achieve their life goals. In 2010 the Long term Community Volunteer Service Award for Sports and Recreation was established to honour an individual annually in our community who has made a significant and lasting volunteer contribution to the well-being of sports. This award now renamed the Kelly Doyle Award of excellence is given out at the October Induction Ceremonies. To offset ongoing operational costs for the Hall, an annual golf tournament was established in the year 2000. This tournament raises sufficient monies each June to maintain and support yearly operations. The tournament sells out every year and it presents an opportunity for inductees and Hall of Fame supporters to gather, reminisce and renew acquaintances. We thank the local community, all inductees and sponsors for making this tournament a great success.
The Hall hosts a media press conference each August at Boston Pizza in Lindsay to announce and introduce the inductees for that year. Anyone wishing to nominate an individual or team, please visit our nomination page for more information and forms.
The Sports Hall of Fame is a not for profit entity operated by a volunteer board of sixteen members, with nine committees. Also, the Hall is a registered charity with by-laws and a governing constitution and accepts donations for its ongoing operations and future plans. Please feel free to visit the Hall’s permanent home at the Lindsay Recreation Complex and view the many interesting displays of sporting memorabilia and achievement. The Hall thanks our two corporate sponsors; John Fox (Boston Pizza – Gold) and John Johnson (John’s Quality Auto – Silver) for their ongoing support and commitment to sports in our area, and to the Lindsay and District Sports Hall of Fame.
